Winter rolls around and so does that dry, itchy skin.  Essential oils can nourish your skin and bring it back to suppleness and smoothness.

The Canadian Dermatology Association recommends against use of harsh soaps, detergents, fabric softeners, lotions etc for eczema and dermatitis. Use gentle skin care products and moisturize often.

1. Bergamot
This essential oil has a long history of use on oily skin, and skin conditions in general, but it can be helpful applied to eczema. It can also be used for minor skin irritations, acne, boils, or dermatitis. Apply one drop directly to area, or moisturize with coconut oil and bergamot. Exercise caution with skin directly exposed to sunlight.2. Myrrh
This essential oil also has a long history of use in skin care, specifically for its moisturizing and cleansing properties to dry skin. This essential oil is quite viscous and can actually gel up in the bottle, but try rolling the bottle vigorously between your hands or running it under some warm water to loosen it up. Myrrh has a beautiful aroma that can also deepen the feeling of spirituality, and it can also be used on minor skin conditions and cuts and bruises. Apply directly to area, or add too coconut oil and moisturize.

3. Helichrysum
This essential oil is commonly known as “immortelle” or “everlasting”. It was traditionally used to support healthy skin. Use this essential oil directly on the affected area or in coconut oil to moisturize. Use to treat acne, boils, minor skin conditions, cuts, bruises, eczema, dermatitis. It’s the perfect bandaid for cuts. It has a minty smell, and if you’re familiar with PanAway essential oil blend, that’s what the aroma it brings to mind immediately.

4. Marjoram
This essential oil has  a warm and calming effect. I enjoy this one most on my muscles, especially after physical activity, if I have joint or muscle pain from sprains, strains, or rheumatoid arthritis. However, it can also relieve eczema. Apply directly to affected area or moisturize with coconut oil.

5. Carrot Seed
This essential oil evens out skin tones, provides moisture and relief from common skin irritations like eczema, dermatitis and acne. It is an ideal ingredient for skin creams to nourish, rejuvenate and maintain the appearance of healthy- looking skin. Not only does this power-packed oil benefit the skin, but it’s also equally valuable for everyday hair care to help prevent split ends, deep condition and provide relief from itchy scalp. Add this essential oil to soaps and lotions, or directly to affected area. It’s a favourite of mine to add to my son’s sensitive skin soap.

Winter Skin Cream

1/4 cup organic coconut oil
1/4 cup unrefined shea butter
15-20  drops myrrh essential oil
15-20  drops helichrysum essential oil
15-20 drops carrot seed essential oil1. Heat shea butter slightly in a double boiler, just enough that it’s softened.
2. Combine with coconut oil and let it cool slightly.
3. Whip coconut oil and shea butter until it’s spreadable. About 5 minutes on high speed.
4. Add essential oils.
5. Store in airtight mason jar out of sunlight. Moisturize skin multiple times a day, especially after a bath.
