We all know what happens when we hit those teenage years. Suddenly, hormones hit and activate sebaceous glands and BOOM! One giant pimple.

One of the biggest mistakes we make, among others, is using harsh chemicals, so let’s talk about natural ways to clear the skin.

Ditch The Chemicals
Focus on skin care. Let’s talk about the chemicals. If you’ve ever had out-of-control skin, you know the urge to want to just zap the bacteria off your face. You try every chemical wash and treatment in the store, but it always seems to come back. Here’s the thing I’ve discovered about using harsh chemicals, alcohols, toners, etc. They generally tend to dry out the skin, making it flaky and taught. The skin then is tricked into thinking it needs more oil and will work overtime to produce more. So, it’s actually counterproductive.
But What Do We DO Then?
1. Wash the face only twice a day with a clay bar.* Try something with green clay, bentonite clay, and moroccan clay, but at least green clay. It draws out the oil without stripping the skin. You can also use Young Living’s Orange Blossom Facial Wash
*Over-washing does the same thing to the skin as using harsh chemicals.
This gentle, soap-free facial wash cleanses the skin without stripping natural oils. It contains MSM for softening, kelp to improve elasticity, and Lavender essential oil to soothe skin.

2. Once a week, exfoliate the face with a gentle scrub. Do not do this every day. It will do the same thing as over-washing, or chemical drying. The skin will panic and start producing too much gunk. Exfoliating removes the dead skin cells, and removing the buildup can help your skin absorb everything else. So it’s beneficial for the skin, but don’t do it every day.

How to Use
Massage gently over face and neck with warm water; rinse thoroughly. Use as needed.

3. Use essential oils and jojoba carrier oil to bring balance to the skin. It may sound counterproductive to use jojoba carrier oil on the skin, but you’re using only drops
of it. Jojoba oil will help balance natural oils on the face, and it doesn’t feel slick. *Click on pictures below for more information on each oil.
Pimple Power Blend
12 drops Sacred Frankincense
15 drops Tea Tree
10 drops Melrose
5 drops Lavender
5 drops Carrot Seed
5 drops Eucalyptus Radiata.
150-160 drops jojoba oil
Use empty dark essential oil bottle and blend. Wash and dry face, and apply 7 drops Pimple Power blend morning and night.
3. Moisturize. Apply a thin layer of moisturizer. I find a serum works the best for my skin because it’s light. At night, I tend to skip the moisturizer, and use fresh, clean towels and pillow cases every day.
Diet & Water
Lastly, diet has a massive impact on the skin. According to the American Academy of Dermatology
, foods with a high glycemic load such as white grains (bread, rice, pasta) and sweets affect the skin. Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet.
And drink water. Make sure your teen isn’t loading up on Slushies, pop, Iced Capps, French Vanillas, lattes etc. (High Five if you’re Canadian and you understand what all of that is!) That stuff is full of sugar.
And be patient. Clearing the skin takes time. Remind your teen to stay consistent.
