DIY Foaming Hand Soap
How many times a day do you wash your hands? Add in your children’s hand-washing activities and it it gets over the top doesn’t it? Lately, my daughter has been making slime, which has resulted in us going through exorbitant amounts of foaming hand soap. I realized one evening that most of our soap containers were empty and we had no refills in the house, so it was time to make DIY foaming hand soap. I absolutely refused to go to town and buy some from Walmart. A) Because it was late, and B) because regular hand soaps are some of the worst culprits for toxic ingredients: parabens, sodium laureth sulfate, fragrance, triclosan. These ingredients do things like disrupt the endocrine system, irritate lungs and skin, cause organ system toxicity.
No thank you!
Enter me scrounging around in the cupboard for a bar of natural soap, some essential oils, fractionated coconut oil, and voila. Hand soap.
Make Homemade Liquid Hand Soap
Homemade Liquid Hand Soap
1 bar unscented natural bar soap
4 cups distilled water, boiled
- Boil water.
- Meanwhile, grate bar of soap by hand or in food processor. It’s much easier to do it with a food processor. Take your grating time from 20 minutes to one.
- Turn off heat. Add soap shavings to boiled water and stir until melted.
- Let sit for 15 minutes to cool and then stir again.
- Let sit until it thickens, several hours or overnight. If the consistency is still too thin, reheat and add more soap shavings.

About Essential Oils
Essential oils are potent extracts of their relative herbs, plant, or fruit, but more powerful and highly concentrated. They come directly from a plant (or the real essential oils do!) and are made of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. The different ways those molecules are arranged creates different constituents that have medicinal affects on the body.
Lemon is a powerful cleanser. It’s used in all kinds of regular cleaning supplies because of it’s abilities to cleanse. It is fresh and removes odours, it fights germs, and helps remove stains. Topical use of lemon essential oil is to fight cough and cold symptoms, a perfect oil for cleansing the body and fighting germs.
Thieves essential oil blend is also a powerful germ fighter; a blend of rosemary, clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus radiata, lemon. Legend has it that thieves of ancient times used to cover their bodies in these botanicals to protect themselves from sickness and germs. Research shows that clove essential oil can be used as a possible antimicrobial agent for external use. Clove on it’s own may be too hot irritating to the skin, but a synergy like Thieves blended with coconut oil in hand soap is a perfect combination for hand soap!
Thieves essential oil is one of Young Living’s most popular blends for good reason, and it’s powerful germ fighting properties makes it the perfect match for our home cleaning supplies like plant-based Thieves Household Cleaner, Thieves Laundry Soap, Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier, Thieves Spray, Thieves Veggie & Fruit Wash, Thieves Foaming Hand Soap!
