How To Clear Negative Energy With Essential Oils

Smudging is an Aboriginal cultural ceremonial practice where sacred herbs are burned as part of a ritual, or for cleansing or health purposes. When a room is being smudged, the smoke is wafted around the area and the person smudging prays for the negative energy to leave and for positive energy to remain. The ashes are placed outside on the ground as a symbol that negative energy is placed outside of our lives.

Many people yoga teachers, energy healers, or alternative health practitioners have adapted this practice because of the power of herbs to clear negative energy. Personally, I choose not to smudge with herbs because I am not Aboriginal and I do not enjoy the smoke, but I still want to clear negativity energy. Instead, I use essential oils.

How To Clear Negative Energy With Essential Oils

1. Fill your diffuser with water and 5-10 drops of Sage & Palo Santo essential oils. Both of these herbs are considered sacred and were used traditionally for clearing energy. They both have constituents that are shown to calm the body.

2. Place the diffuser in the desired area and diffuse for 30 minutes.

3. Move the diffuser to the next area and diffuse again for 30 minutes until each room is cleansed. Fill diffuser again as needed.

The smudging process involves fire, which adds an additional purifying element to the clearing. Obviously, diffusing essential oils does not contain the fire piece, so there may be a slightly different experience. I still prefer essential oils because I don’t like smoke. Do not burn your essential oils in an incense burner or candle. Burning the oils changes the chemistry of them and negatively affects the therapeutic benefits.

Please note: the Palo Santo tree is an endangered species. I use Palo Santo that is sustainably sourced and distilled only from dead-fall. Another reason why I’m hesitant to purchase Palo Santo bundles.
